On Monday November 20,2023 a team of students from Galaxy International School Uganda (GISU) led by Mr Dhasangi Bernard, their English and Literature teacher visited the Criminal Division at the Judiciary Headquarters, Kampala.

The purpose of the visit was to learn about court processes as well as the operations of the Judiciary.

The students were taken on a guided tour of the courts premises and proceeded to attend a live court session presided over by Hon. Lady Justice Margaret Mutonyi. Here they learnt how court handles a case that has been plea bargained.

From court, the students were taken to the Judge's chambers where Hon. Lady Justice Mutonyi shared her personal judicial career experience. She explained to them the different cases she has handled, challenges faced, court decisions delivered and how she has managed to stay composed regardless of the nature of cases she handles.

"Sometimes you become emotional while handling some cases but then we are trained to stay composed and act professionally at all times. At times, one is forced to stand over or adjourn a case whenever they need to process," she said.

Hon. Lady Justice Mutonyi also demonstrated the acceptable dress code of Judicial Officers and explained to them different court procedures.

HW Festo Nsenga, Deputy Registrar Criminal Division took the students through the different roles of each court as well as the structure in the Judiciary.

Senior Communications Officer, Ms Halimah Kaggwa, took the students through the different court levels, the roles of judicial officers, functions of courts in our society and the different offices and departments in the court system.
